Meridith Marks Award for Excellence in Education

The Meridith Marks Award for Excellence in Education was developed by the CPRDF and CAPM&R to recognize excellence in education among physiatrists. The Award is named in honour of Dr. Meridith Marks to acknowledge her significant contributions to medical education in Canada. The award recipient will be announced at the CAPM&R annual meeting and be presented with a plaque. They will be invited to give a 30-minute oral presentation at the annual meeting on a topic relevant to medical education. The award recipient’s conference registration, travel and hotel costs will be covered by the CAPM&R (restrictions apply).

Criteria:

The recipient of this award will be a CAPM&R member in good standing who has contributed to education within the CAPM&R, as well as to medical education at a local and national level. A maximum of one award per year will be given, based on the quality of applications received.

Award of Merit

In a spirit of recognition for achievement, contribution, and character, the CAPM&R introduces the Award of Merit: In past years, members with outstanding and exemplary contributions to the field of physiatry were recognized by an Honorary Lecture, held during the Association’s Annual Scientific Meeting. In 2008, CAPM&R Executive Committee elected to resurrect the award, renaming it the CAPM&R Award of Merit. Our Association members are no ordinary citizens; with valuable contributions to both the art and science of medicine, mentoring, advocacy, humanitarianism, research, and education. The deadline for nominations for the Award of Merit is of each year. The Executive of the CAPM&R will select the recipient.

Criteria:

  • Must be a member in good standing with the CAPM&R (any category).
  • Must have contributed to the activities of the CAPM&R and/or CPRDF
  • Must not be a current member of the CAPM&R Executive Committee.
  • Must be nominated by peers, at least one who is a CAPM&R member.
  • Has made a contribution to the field of Physiatry, through research, education, advocacy, medical care, humanitarianism, mentorship, or the advancement of our field.

Visiting Professorship Program

The purpose of the Visiting Professorship Program is to provide funds ($2,000) to a Canadian Centre to help finance the visit of an out-of-town physician.
Objectives:
  1. Promote knowledge of the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation;
  2. Encourage research and education in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation;
  3. Enable centres that might otherwise not be able to afford it, the opportunity to bring in a guest speaker.

Criteria:

  • Every member in good standing may apply to the Education Committee for an award from the Association.
  • The funding year is to . The application deadline is October 15 of each year. In the event that there are no successful submissions we reserve the right to hold a spring competition.
  • All applicants must submit an application form to the CAPM&R office at info@capmr.ca.
  • All submissions will be reviewed and an award announced within two weeks of this deadline. Applicants will be notified in writing of their status. The decision of the committee is final.
  • The Visiting Professorship Program will not make an award to the same applicant or locale in two consecutive years unless other suitable applicants have not applied.
  • The applicant forfeits the professorship award if not used before October 15 of the year following the awarding of the professorship.
  • One award of $2000 will be awarded for the period to .
  • A completed evaluation form summarizing the visiting professor’s program must be submitted with receipts for reimbursement to the Education Committee within 30 days of the visit.

International Rehabilitation Award for International Physiatrists

The purpose of the International Rehabilitation Award for International Physiatrists is to provide funds to an International physiatrist to help finance the cost of educational opportunities within Canada.
Objectives:
  • To provide educational funding assistance for an international physiatrist wishing to obtain PM&R medical education in Canada.
  • To promote knowledge dissemination of PM&R in Canada at an international level;
  • To develop international collaborations in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation;

Criteria:

  1. An international physiatrist in good standing may apply to the CAPM&R for funding.
  2. The funding year is to . The application deadline is of each year prior to the funding period. Applications received after this date will NOT be accepted.
  3. The applications shall be reviewed by the International Rehabilitation Special Interest Group and the Awardee shall be selected by the Executive Committee. Applicants will be notified in writing of their status. The decision of the committee is final.
  4. The International Rehabilitation Award for International Physiatrists will not make an award to the same applicant more than once.
  5. The applicant forfeits the award if not used before of the year following the notification of funding.
  6. One award of up to maximum of $1000 will be awarded for the period to , in the ‘year’ the funding was awarded.
  7. A completed evaluation and summary of the visit, summarizing the outcome is required. The summary should highlight the benefits to the recipient and to their community that was served. The receipts and summary must be submitted for reimbursement to the executive director of CAPM&R within 30 days of the visit.
  8. The award is supported by the CPRDF.

International Rehabilitation Award for Canadian Physiatrists

The purpose of the International Rehabilitation Award for Canadian Physiatrists is to provide funds to a Canadian physiatrist or physiatry resident to help finance volunteer rehabilitation work outside of Canada and the US.
Objectives:
  • To provide funding assistance for the delivery of physiatry care in low resource areas of the world.
  • To promote knowledge of the specialty of physical medicine and rehabilitation internationally;
  • To develop international collaborations in the field of physical medicine and rehabilitation;

Criteria:

  1. An Active Member or Resident Member in good standing may apply to the CAPM&R for funding.
  2. The funding year is to . The application deadline is of each year prior to the funding period. Applications received after this date will NOT be accepted.
  3. The applications shall be reviewed by the International Rehabilitation Special Interest Group and the Awardee shall be selected by the Executive Committee. Applicants will be notified in writing of their status. The decision of the committee is final.
  4. The International Rehabilitation Award for Canadian Physiatrists will not make an award to the same applicant more than once.
  5. The applicant forfeits the award if not used before of the year following the notification of funding.
  6. One award of up to maximum of $1000 will be awarded for the period September 1st to August 31st, in the ‘year’ the funding was awarded.
  7. A completed evaluation and summary of the visit, summarizing the outcome is required. The summary should highlight the benefits to the recipient as well as to the individuals/group that was served. The receipts and summary must be submitted for reimbursement to the executive director of CAPM&R within 30 days of the visit.
  8. The award is supported by the CPRDF.
