CAHS 2022 Forum | The Mental and Physical Health of Public Safety Personnel

Public Safety Personnel (PSP) face diverse psychological stressors, toxic physical exposures, and risk of physical injury and death, all in the routine performance of their duties. There is also evidence of other operational and organizational stressors having important negative impacts on PSP health.

CAHS 2022 Forum | The Mental and Physical Health of Public Safety Personnel

The Canadian Academy of Health Sciences (CAHS) will be hosting a Forum on the Mental and Physical Health of Public Safety Personnel (PSP) on September 8 and 9 in Montréal, Québec.

The CAHS 2022 Forum, led by Co-chairs including Dr. R. Nicholas Carleton, Ph.D., R.D. Psych., FCAHS, RSC College Member, and the Canadian Institute for Public Safety Research and Treatment Scientific Director, at the University of Regina, Distinguished Professor, Dr. Joy MacDermid, Ph.D., FCAHS, FRSC at Western University, Dr. Alain Brunet, Ph.D., FCAHS and Director of the McGill Research Laboratory on Traumatic Stress, at McGill University.

About Public Safety Personnel

Public Safety Personnel (PSP) include more than 350,000 professionals such as border services personnel, correctional workers, firefighters, operational and intelligence personnel, paramedics, police, public safety communicators, search and rescue personnel.  Some are employees, but about 100,000 are volunteers.  All PSP are facing increased risks of difficulties with mental health symptoms and physical health challenges.

Exposure to toxic chemicals increasing cancer risks, stress causing heart diseases, physical abuse, and a myriad of other stressors result in elevated health issues for PSPs.

Research (prior to COVID-19) indicated that PSP faces mental health issues at a rate of five times higher than diagnostic rates for the general population, and there is evidence of suicidal ideation, planning, and attempts at rates at least twice higher than the general population.

What To Look Forward To At This Event

The CAHS 2022 Forum will focus on PSP-specific health research and knowledge translation challenges, offering potentially impactful engagement opportunities. The CAHS 2022 forum will conclude by showcasing the important relationships between PSP and our frontline healthcare workers, who also need our support. Together we hope to find solutions to protect all those who serve.
